"Until the lion tells its story, every story will glorify the hunter."

- African Proverb

Currently, the majority of American history books are written from a male Eurocentric viewpoint and perpetuate the prejudice and racism that people across the globe are currently fighting to change. As recently as 2015, McGraw Hill, one of the largest distributors of American text books was still describing enslavement as though it was a voluntary immigration. Rather than wait for someone else to correct the problem...OGL created the History Makers Workshop (HMW).

The HMW provides a platform for BIPOC Americans to research, document, preserve and publicize their family legacy and involvement in the development of America in their own voice. It is time for the hunted to tell their story.

Our target demographic are members of the BIPOC community ages 13 – 85 living in underserved communities and federally designated Promise Zones across the United States who are interested in learning how to do their own Legacy Tracing. The primary components of Legacy Tracing involve: 1. learning how to maximize AncestryDNA results using and other third party platforms; 2. how to find and use evidentiary documents also known as primary source data pertaining to their family legacy; 3. conduct and document oral interviews with a focus on intergenerational exchange; 4. Examine research in proper context of American history; 5. Organize research to write a complete legacy story based on primary sources.

At the end of 2021, a new OGL history book will be completed thus publicizing an expected 30 new BIPOC American legacies.  Each year, a new history book will be published. These new history books expose both the writers and the readers to previously undocumented American history and gives agency to BIPOC people to tell their own story on a global scale.
